Hunger is a general food deficiency. In other words, hunger occurs when the amount of food available is not enough to meet nutritional needs. This leads to malnutrition and increased mortality from hunger. The most vulnerable populations to this problem are children, women, the elderly and people with fewer resources. Covid-19 has been one of the aggravators of hunger in recent years.
One of the biggest reasons of hunger is poverty. The lack of jobs or low income makes it harder to buy food along with other factors, like poor medical care. Another cause of hunger is climate change. Climate change affects food production in many countries due to the high/extreme temperatures. Poor countries like Guatemala, Haití, Kenia, etc. are the most affected by this.
Covid 19 was an aggravator of hunger because a lot of people lost their jobs. People's fear and the limitations of the pandemic caused small businesses to close, leaving many people without work or money. International trade stopped, and food production was limited due to the situation. With the limitation, food turn more expensive. Fortunately, people today are recovering from the consequences of the pandemic.
As one of the greatest problems in the world, there are many organizations and charities that help needy people. Action Against Hunger Organization saves lives by eliminating hunger through the prevention, detection, and treatment of malnutrition; they also teach the communities to provide for themselves. Bread for the World Institute is also an organization that focuses on educating and analyzing the world's hunger problem. Other organizations and charities that combat hunger are Feeding America, Food Bank for New York City, No Kid Hungry, etc.
